![]() Your protagonist can be a space alien, a one-eyed giant, or a talking spatula. This doesn’t mean a character can’t be imaginative or far-fetched. If a character is stingy and mean in the beginning and suddenly becomes kind and generous with no believable circumstance to cause the change, we’ll dismiss him as inauthentic. He should be consistent in the way he looks at life and responds to circumstances. He (or she) has to speak and act in ways that ordinary people can relate to. Here are two keys to creating a sympathetic main character.įirst, the protagonist has to seem real. It’s important to create a protagonist that people sympathize with and care about. Most stories have a central character called a protagonist. The point is, we feel strongly about them one way or another. Some characters are lovable (Wilbur the pig, Bilbo Baggins, Pinocchio), some are heroic (Odysseus, Paul Bunyan, Superman), some are tragic (Hamlet, Willy Loman, John Henry), and some are just plain evil (Iago, Saruman, The Wicked Witch of the West). The most important aspect of a great fictional character is how much the reader cares about him.
